I have crocheted several projects with Lily Sugar 'n Cream yarn. This is a 100% cotton yarn, which makes it great for projects such as kitchen towels or washcloths because of the absorbency of cotton yarn. Cotton is made up of a high percent of cellulose, and it can carry up to 27 times its weight in water due to the hydrophilic properties of cellulose and capillary action in the fibers.
Sugar 'n Cream comes in a nice variety of colors, but it is especially important to pay attention to the dye lot because of how much the shade can vary of dyed cotton yarn. Generally, I do not pay attention to dye lot because the difference between dye lots seems negligible for most yarns, but this yarn can vary by several shades due to different dye lots. The yarn is not particularly soft or stretchy, but I do not mind because I am using it for dish towels and uses in which the absorbency matters much more than the softness. However, I would probably not use this yarn for a blanket or for clothing because I would prefer to use a softer yarn for those projects. The yarn is fairly thin, so I use a small crochet hook with this yarn (usually size 3.75mm). I mostly make small projects such as hand towels, dish towels, or coasters, so the projects are not too time-consuming.
Pros:
-100% cotton so great for dish towels due to the absorbency of the natural fibers
-lots of colors available
-machine washable, which is useful and for heavily-used items such as dish cloths
Cons:
-yarn threads split easily when crocheting with the yarn
-colors vary significantly due to dye lot
I buy this yarn from Michales, which gives the following info on the yarn:
"This yarn is the ultimate and favorite cotton yarn that’s ideal for knit, crochet and crafting projects. It’s a classic worsted weight with a 50 year history that is the recognized choice for not only dishcloths with its super absorbency, but also for décor items throughout the home."
